Capacity Building for Social Leaders through Taekwondo: “Cultivating Taekwondo Leaders”

On September 1, 1982, Kukkiwon established the World Taekwondo Academy (WTA), initially named the Taekwondo Training Center, to cultivate Taekwondo leaders with both technical expertise and strong character. The WTA follows a standardized curriculum designed to disseminate the spirit and skills of Taekwondo worldwide.

To enhance the capabilities of Taekwondo leaders, the WTA offers a variety of courses, including:

  • International Taekwondo Master Courses (1st–3rd)
  • Taekwondo Poom-Dan Examiner Courses (1st–3rd)
  • World Taekwondo Hanmadang Referee Courses (1st–3rd)
  • Disabled Taekwondo Master Courses (3rd)
  • Taekwondo Self-Defense (Hoshinsul) Coach Courses (3rd)
  • 4th Poom-Dan Transition Refresher Education Courses, among others.
  •

The WTA continuously adapts to the changing times, integrating innovative educational methods and content. It developed and advanced the Cyber Training Center system and online education content in 2016–2017, established a comprehensive education plan in 2018, and updated regulations, textbooks, and the training system in 2019. In 2020, the first three master courses transitioned online, allowing trainees to access theoretical instruction without geographical limitations.

Today, approximately 80,000 Taekwondo leaders trained by Kukkiwon are not only nurturing the next generation of Taekwondo practitioners but also embodying its spirit while contributing meaningfully to society worldwide.
